From Consultation to Recovery: What to Expect with Dental Implants

Dental implants are the only genuine replacement for a missing tooth. This treatment plan is intended to replace a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth using a titanium root that replicates the role of the natural tooth root.

This treatment is unlike other cosmetic treatments in that it takes place over multiple visits with time for healing in between. With this in mind, it’s important for patients to go into the treatment plan with realistic expectations.

A lot can change during the treatment plan, so it’s important to be flexible. It’s also vital that you are able to follow the aftercare instructions, as this is one of the biggest indicators of success.

With this in mind, we’re looking at what you can expect from the dental implant treatment journey, from your initial consultation to the final recovery period. Read on to learn more about how dental implants could work for you.

The consultation

The consultation is about more than just selling you a treatment plan. It’s your chance to ask questions and get clear on what this treatment entails. It’s also your dentist’s opportunity to determine if you are a good candidate and to start planning your treatment accordingly.

You might have an X-ray or CT scan during your initial consultation. Your dentist might also ask questions about your oral health, your lifestyle habits and your expectations for the treatment.

If they determine you are a good candidate, they can start to design your treatment plan. At this point, your dentist can make estimates as to how long the treatment will take, but final healing times will be subject to change.

Placing the implant

The first step in the treatment plan is to place the impact in your jaw bone. To do this, your dentist needs to first expose the bone by making a small incision in your gum. They will then use a drill to create a small pocket in your bone to hold the implant.

The implant is inserted into the bone and the gum is stitched closed above it. The bone will heal around the implant and fuse with the titanium to create a solid foundation for the implant restoration.

Healing times can vary, and having multiple implants will extend the healing time. Your dentist will give you an estimation of how long this will take. You can support the healing process by following aftercare instructions and taking it easy in the days following your treatment.

Placing the healing abutment

The abutment sits atop the implant and is visible above the gum line. This provides something for the crown, bridge or denture to rest on. To place the abutment, your dentist will wait until the implant has sufficiently healed. They will then expose the top of the implant and attach the abutment.

The gum is then contoured around the abutment to help create a more natural finish. You will have aftercare instructions to follow once again, and you may need to take it easy after your treatment. You will likely have to switch to a diet of soft food to prevent damage to the abutment.

Placing the final restoration

The final stage in the procedure can be completed once the gum has healed around the abutment. The crown will be designed to fit the surrounding and opposite teeth perfectly. It might take some time to get used to your restored bite, and you might have to chew with caution while you get used to the newcomer.

It can also feel strange to chew using your new tooth. We recommend adjusting your diet to include softer and less chewy foods while you get used to your dental implant.

Aftercare advice for dental implants

There are some changes that you will need to make in the days and weeks following treatment, and there are some changes that you will need to make for life. You’ll have to say goodbye to habits like smoking or vaping after you have dental implant treatment, as this can put you at increased risk of implant failure.

You’ll also need to commit to regular dental checkups and take good care of your teeth at home. If there are any issues with your implants, it’s a good idea to visit the dentist for peace of mind.
